PE & Games
Curriculum Intent
At Ludlow Junior School, we firmly believe in the transformative power of physical education. By engaging and motivating all pupils through our lessons, clubs, sports teams, and other sporting opportunities, we aim to develop a lifelong passion for physical activity. Our curriculum is designed to be both supportive and challenging, ensuring that every child finds joy and success in a wide range of physical activities.
Our primary objective is to deliver a curriculum that equips children with the skills necessary for success and enjoyment in various physical pursuits. We aspire to foster positive attitudes, enhance physical fitness, and promote an active lifestyle that students will carry with them into secondary school and beyond.
Our broad and varied PE and Games curriculum focuses on skill development and the acquisition of key knowledge and terminology. Students are encouraged to perform and refine these skills, enhancing their social and personal abilities in the process. The curriculum aims to:
- Support children's health and fitness
- Build physical confidence
- Emphasise the positive impact of physical activity on mental health, productivity, and motivation
We prioritise high-quality teaching and learning opportunities in PE to ensure these goals are met.
Our PE and games sessions are aligned with the aims of the national curriculum, ensuring that pupils:
- Develop competence in a broad range of physical activities
- Are physically active for sustained periods
- Engage in competitive sports and activities
- Lead healthy, active lives
Year 3 and 4 students are exposed to a wide variety of sports, focusing on the key skills relevant to each sport or activity. This is coupled with life skills such as communication and teamwork. Within year 5 and 6, we build upon the skills acquired in earlier years, allowing students to apply these in matches or routines. This phase emphasises tactics, aesthetic skills, and understanding rules. Additionally, students will enhance their body control and confidence through dance and gymnastics sessions.
Ludlow Junior School takes pride in offering students numerous opportunities to represent the school in events, competitions, and festivals. We aim to provide all children with experiences that challenge and inspire them, offering platforms for those who excel in sports to showcase their talents.
By fostering an environment where every child can thrive and develop a passion for physical education, we are committed to nurturing well-rounded individuals who appreciate the importance of health, fitness, and teamwork.
