Ludlow Junior School

History

Curriculum Intent

The history curriculum at Ludlow Junior School is intended to spark curiosity in our children. We endeavour to bring the past to life inside and outside of the classroom and, in doing so, igniting the children’s creativity , develop their inquiry skills to question evidence, fostering a desire to learn about the lives that went before them and gaining a secure chronological understanding of different historical eras.

History learning is creative, engaging and inspires wonder. Our children are hooked into learning through eagerness and inquisitiveness. Across the school, local study units and real-life contexts are used to underpin the skills and knowledge to be a successful historian.

At Ludlow Junior school, our aims for history reflect the aims of the National Curriculum. The curriculum should:

  • Inspire pupils’ interest to delve deeper into the past.
  • Support and guide pupils to know and understand significant historical aspects and events of the wider world and in their locality.

At Ludlow, our curriculum builds upon a diverse range of historical topics to ensure inclusivity, tolerance and respect are covered to coincide with our “No Outsiders” status. Our learning transports children back from ancient civilisations to more recent historical events, covering local, British and world history context. Throughout these topics, we encourage children to make links between the time periods studied, and to avoid seeing them as separate chapters within the history books. We recurrently revisit timelines at the start of every topic to build upon the children’s schemata of learning.
