Science
Curriculum Intent
At Ludlow Junior School, we provide children with the opportunity for exploration and rich experiences, which will empower our children to open their eyes to the wider world. Through this engaging and practical curriculum, we will provide the tools to succeed, whilst also removing barriers, ensuring all children reach their potential.
Our aims for science reflect those of the National Curriculum. At Ludlow, children are taught how to use individual working scientifically skills so that they can utilise them in scientific enquiry whilst also building upon their conceptual understanding. Each topic includes lessons where individual scientific enquiry skills are taught in conjunction with the required knowledge to aid children’s understanding of the world around.
At Ludlow each unit is carefully sequenced using key questions and objectives to ensure children’s understanding is deepened at an appropriate pace. Firstly, children are taught key concepts, which are broken down into specific components, along with new scientific vocabulary which they apply when completing scientific enquiries. Children are encouraged to express their thoughts and ask questions to challenge and deepen their understanding using scientific vocabulary and are given opportunities to explore and enquire about areas of interest within topics. This is revisited to build children’s schemata and is appropriately adapted to ensure it is accessible to all pupils.
At Ludlow we provide opportunities for children to problem-solve, both independently and with their peers, which enables them to acquire transferable skills such as observing, collecting data and interpreting. These experiences are invaluable as they challenge their conceptual understanding, and help our children want to make a positive impact to the world around them throughout their lives.
