Ludlow Junior School

French

Curriculum Intent

At Ludlow Junior School, we put communication and cultural understanding at the forefront of our whole curriculum. In a multi-cultural and multi-lingual community we believe that it is vital for our children to invest in their ‘cultural capital’ so that their knowledge and understanding of the world is enhanced.

Our emphasis on effective and positive communication is central to the teaching and learning of French so that children can make linguistic and cultural connections between languages and societies. The etymology of English and French have shared histories and we constantly encourage our children to make connections between the two languages as they speak, listen and read in both languages.

Our intent is for our children to embrace the learning of French through singing, games, speaking and listening. We promote excitement and curiosity in making those connections so that children embrace their language learning, preparing them for Key Stage 3.

We believe that an understanding of different countries, cultures and languages promotes our umbrella culture of respect, tolerance and inclusion as promoted by being a ‘No-Outsiders’ school.

At Ludlow, we love to make links between French and English when we read in either language. Many French and English words share a common route. This makes us language detectives and we are always searching for clues!

We enjoy singing songs, playing games and reading familiar fairy tales and picture books in French.

We love to feel that we are part of a wider community and enjoy learning more about the geography, history and life-style of France and the French people.
