Design & Technology
Curriculum Intent
At Ludlow Junior School, the design technology curriculum is intended to inspire pupil’s creativity and imagination, help them to develop new skills and take on new exciting challenges. We endeavour to inspire and encourage problem solving where pupils take risks and become resourceful and insightful designers. We want our pupils to design and make products within a variety of contexts, considering their own and other’s needs, wants and values. The skills which they learn will help pupil’s with their futures in becoming engineers, builders, architects, product designers and evaluators.
At Ludlow Junior School our aims for design technology is that all pupils acquire appropriate subject knowledge, skills and understanding as set out in the National Curriculum. The curriculum should inspire innovation and imagination through designing and making products that develop technical and practical expertise. It will also enable pupils to critique, evaluate and test their ideas and products
At Ludlow, our design technology curriculum aims to give our pupil’s opportunities, responsibilities, and experiences they can use later in life. Each unit of work begins with research that feeds into communication through design. When designing, pupils are encouraged to communicate their ideas through diagrams, mock ups and prototypes. They learn technical knowledge relating to structures, mechanisms, levers and linkages, textiles and food technology. After designing their products, pupils will then take part in practical sessions where children will develop skills in measuring, constructing, strengthening and building using ap-propriate tools safely. The pupil’s then reflect and evaluate their designs, the making process and their final product, ensuring that it meets the initial design brief.
At Ludlow, the pupil’s skills of designing, making and evaluating are progressively built upon as pupil’s grow through the school. It is our aim to create strong cross curricular links with other subjects, such as mathe-matics, science, computing, history and art. We want to encourage pupil’s to use a growth mindset, show confidence, develop a critical understanding of problem solving and become ambitious designers. Ultimately, we aim to build an awareness of the impact of design and technology on our lives and encourage our pupil’s to become enterprising citizens. Our pupil’s will have the skills to impact the future of design advancements.
